Becoming
an ENSP Major:
We
welcome your interest in our major!
If
you are eager to help solve environmental problems...Try some of our classes - many of them meet University CORE requirements.
- ENSP
101 (Core PS)
- ENSP
102 (You do not need ENSP 101 to take ENSP 102)
- BSCI
106 (Core LL), GEOG 201/211 (Core PL), GEOL 100/110 (Core PL), ENST 200 (Core LL)
- AREC
240 (Core SB)
Identify
careers and concentrations
that interest you. You do not need to decide between them right
away, but preliminary exploration helps your advisor help you
as you explore the possibilities and keep your options
open.
Explore
the "suggested"
graduation plans, as well, to assess in general terms the number of requirements
and/or electives you'll have. Students are expected to complete the
ENSP Benchmarks, including the Calculus requirement, in a
timely manner, since success in these courses predicts your
long-term happiness and academic progress in this major.
Finally,
since you can't learn everything you need to know in this major
from a book, plan to complement your coursework with practical
experience. This includes internships
and volunteer experience, involvement in campus
clubs and activities, participation in undergraduate
research programs, and off-campus
study programs -- especially those that take place outside
the mid-Atlantic ecosystem.
If
you like what you see (and we hope you do!) please prepare a DRAFT graduation plan using the resources here. The purpose of the plan is not to "tie you down" to a specific concentration, but to help you evaluate in concrete terms your interests in this major, and to generate questions for advising. This exercise is especially important if you have more than 40 credits already completed. --> Students with more than 40 credits completed will not be declared into ENSP without a draft graduation plan in hand at the time of our meeting. I prefer a Word version, as ultimately I will need to review, possibly correct, and ultimately approve your plan; and then must send it on to the College of your Concentration. I will also send you a copy of your approved plan at that time.
FINALLY...
... E-MAIL: Dr. Whittemore at wwhitte@umd.edu
Please send THREE different days/times that would be good for
you to meet (excluding Wednesdays and Fridays); and she will e-mail back to confirm one of them.
Dr. Whittemore has two offices on campus, so it is easier to reach
her by e-mail than by phone.
OR:
Call Ms. Joyce Brown at 301.405.8571 to schedule an advising appointment
with Dr. Whittemore.
Advising
expectations:
Advising
is mandatory for all students in ENSP, regardless of GPA,
credit level, or area of concentration. Students must earn a C
grade or higher in all courses used to complete ENSP core and
concentration requirements, including restricted electives. Students
begin as Undeclared in ENSP; and will receive specialized advising
to help them identify and decide upon an area of concentration.
Students
with < 15 credits completed -->
Please bring next semester's plan.
Note:
Students are expected to complete the ENSP
Benchmarks in a timely manner, since success in these
courses predicts your long-term happiness and academic progress
in this major.
Students
with 15-29 credits completed
--> Please bring a 2-semester plan, including a plan for
completing your Benchmarks.
Students
with 30-39 credits completed
--> Please prepare a "possible/proposed" Graduation
Plan --> sent ahead by e-mail, as an attachment in Word,
to Dr. W. at least 2 WEEKS prior to advising. You
will find step-by-step directions HERE.
All
students who are ready to do so, will declare an area of concentration
by the end of the third semester in ENSP.
Students
with > 40 credits
--> Please prepare a "formal" graduation plan and send it ahead by e-mail, as an attachment in Word, to Dr. W. AT LEAST 2 WEEKS prior to advising. You will not be permitted to register without a completed Graduation Plan. Directions
are HERE.
Students
are expected to declare an area of concentration no later
than the semester in which they complete 60 credits.
Students
who have been in ENSP for more than one semester and have >
60 credits -->
Will be expected to complete a Graduation Plan and declare a concentration PRIOR to registration.
Students'
e-mail addresses must be kept up-to-date with the University
(via TESTUDO)
and with ENSP. Official University communication is now being
sent to the address listed on TESTUDO. We will send ours via the
e-mail address you give us. Even after students decide upon a
concentration and move administratively to a new department and/or
College, they will receive ENSP advising messages and remain an
active participant in ENSP activities.

We
want you to succeed!
Challenge
yourself to do more than the minimums.
Talk to your advisor about how to prepare for the best possible
entry-level positions and/or
graduate schools - and then
do it!
Please
let us know ASAP anything outside of school (illness, family emergency,
or other extenuating circumstances) is affecting your academic
performance.
We can't solve the problem, but we can try to minimize its effects
on your academic progress. Please contact your assigned advisor
or e-mail Dr. Whittemore (wwhitte@umd.edu) ASAP to give us the
most flexibility re: strategies or resources.
