Marko Maver '09 (Environmental Economics) currently works as a Deputy Director at Slovenia's Ministry of natural resources and spatial planning and is mainly responsible for policy development on natural resource management and nature protection.
Previously he also served as the State Secretary for the Environment, as well as worked for an NGO in Brussels and in financial fraud investigation. His current experiences impacted him in an interesting way in that it helped him see the complexities of policy development, which often run into public and political opposition.
More often than not, compromises need to be made and coordinating with stakeholders is a critical component of that. The experience of working in the government sector also allowed him to become more patient and determined in his professional and personal life.
His career path was most definitely influenced by his ENSP education. In particular, his AREC professor Dr. Alberini, who supported and guided him along the way. One of the greatest things he's learned is that we can too easily be influenced by our professional bias and that the most important skill to learn is to be able to take a step back and be critical of your views as well as that of others.
