For almost four years, Tyler Ruth '20 has worked at Blackwater Environmental Group in the transportation/environmental planning industry, with a strong focus on NEPA compliance, renewable energy, and climate resilience.
Working in a smaller company gave him the opportunity to take on a variety of roles, which allowed Tyler to develop a comprehensive understanding of both the transportation and environmental sectors. This experience has had a significant impact on him, not only refining his technical skills but also teaching him the importance of collaboration, adaptability, and attention to detail.
Tyler's experience directly relates to his ENSP education, as it provided a solid foundation in environmental policy and planning, allowing him to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world projects. It has also deepened his understanding of the importance of sustainable transportation systems and the critical role planners play in shaping communities. This combination of education and hands-on experience has shaped his career path by solidifying my desire to contribute to large-scale projects that improve infrastructure and environmental quality on a national level.
Just this past month, he continued his education with the University of Baltimore, pursuing a Master of Public Administration. The greatest thing he's learned is the importance of long-term thinking in planning. Every decision has far-reaching impacts, whether on the environment, communities, or future generations. Understanding that his work can influence these outcomes has been a motivating factor in his desire to grow professionally and take on larger, more impactful roles.
